QuickBooks Desktop is winding down: what it means for you

The short version

Intuit has been steadily reducing the availability and support of QuickBooks Desktop, pushing customers toward QuickBooks Online. If you run Pro, Premier or Enterprise, you don't need to panic — but you should plan, rather than wait to be forced into a rushed year-end migration.

Your three realistic options

First, move to QuickBooks Online. For most small and mid-size firms this is the path of least resistance and gives you anywhere-access. Second, stay on Desktop/Enterprise for as long as it suits your inventory or control needs — valid, but plan for an eventual move. Third, move to a different platform entirely (Xero, Sage) if QuickBooks no longer fits.

Why the built-in tool isn't always enough

Intuit's automated Desktop-to-Online converter struggles with large files, list limits and certain transaction types. If your file is big or has years of history, a specialist conversion that reconciles the result is the safer route.

Move on your schedule

The worst time to migrate is under deadline pressure. Scope the move now, pick a clean cut-over date, and keep your old file as a read-only archive. That's exactly the kind of conversion we run every week.
