The Canadian desktop retirement: moving Sage 50 CA and QuickBooks Desktop

Desktop country

Canada held onto desktop accounting longer than most — Sage 50 Canada (the old Simply Accounting) and QuickBooks Desktop still run an enormous share of small-business books. But vendor road maps point one direction, and every year-end another wave of Canadian firms plans the move to QuickBooks Online or Xero.

The two Canadian complications

First, tax: GST/HST plus provincial variations mean historical coding must survive conversion, or past filings become unexplainable. Second, currency: USD/CAD dual-currency files are routine in Canadian books and are precisely where naive migrations corrupt balances. Both are scoping questions we settle before quoting — not surprises after. If you file GST/HST under the Quick Method or are planning a mid-year switch, read how GST/HST reporting periods and the Quick Method affect a move to Xero or QuickBooks first. Intuit’s own Sage 50 Canada path drops multicurrency, payroll and projects outright; the Dataswitcher limits post goes through its published list.

What to demand from any converter

Full transaction history (not just openings), tax codes mapped rather than flattened, explicit multi-currency treatment in the scope, and a reconciliation against your source trial balance to the cent — delivered as evidence, not assurances.
